Getting started
What to expect
It can feel like a big step to contact someone you've never met. Here's most of what you need to know beforehand.
Is therapy right for me?
Therapy is a structured, confidential conversation with a trained professional, where you explore thoughts, feelings and patterns, and find ways forward. It can help if you notice, for example:
- persistent mood shifts
- disruptions in your sleep or appetite
- physical symptoms like headaches or muscle tension
- relying on unhealthy ways of coping in stressful times
- struggling to navigate life transitions
- challenges in your relationships with others
- work-related stress, parenting challenges, or the digital age taking its toll
Considering therapy is a commitment to prioritising your mental well-being.
How sessions work
- 01
The first session
I take your patient history: your background, upbringing, family relationships, any medical background or other relevant information, and why you, your child or your family are seeking therapy. We talk about any earlier experience of therapy, and about your expectations, goals and concerns. I also go through how therapy works, confidentiality, next of kin and other practical information.
- 02
Between sessions
I often suggest something to read, listen to or try: a book, a podcast episode, an article or an exercise, chosen for you. It builds on what we've talked about, helps you understand the thinking behind it, and keeps the work going until we meet again.
- 03
Screenings
If we do any screenings, I schedule a feedback session to go through the results and how I can best support you.
